Job Summary

Leverages in depth knowledge of one or more clinical specialty areas to effectively manage highly complex care, This includes multidisciplinary collaboration that identifies and prioritizes nursing care needs for a population of patients and families. Develops, implements and evaluates new models of practice across the continuum of care. Leads the implementation of new policies and procedures across all nursing units. Collaborates with other clinical nurse specialists and health system leadership to lead change and develop evidence-based models of practice

Provides direct patient care to a diversified patient population. Applies knowledge, experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, set priorities, and use abstract thought to evaluate clinical situations. Participates in patient and staff education. Demonstrates leadership skills. Demonstrates accountability for own practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
  • Valid California Registered Nurse license, and Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist license.
  • Valid California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing license, if a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current national board certification as a Nurse Practitioner in an aligned specialty, if a nurse practitioner
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR, and all certifications required for area of work
  • Graduation with a master's degree, DNP or PhD in Nursing from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Two years of recent experience as a advanced practice nurse specialist
  • One year or greater experience managing health system policy and evidenced based practice initiatives
  • At least six months of experience with precepting, orienting and Advanced Practice Provider education
  • Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role
  • Ability to meet minimum standards for hospital credentialing and billing standards as a billable provider.

Department Overview

UC Davis Health is at the forefront of incorporating Advanced Practice Providers (APP) as part of interprofessional care teams to support increasing numbers of complex care patients. APPs are vital parts of the multidisciplinary hospital based teams caring for our patients in specialty care throughout the UC Davis Health system.

Department Specific Job Scope

To provide independent advanced level advanced practice clinical expertise to patients and their families on an on-going basis and oversee other advanced practice providers. This includes managing scheduling, time off requests and organizational oversight of the work unit to ensure the competence and qualifications of direct reports. Management of the Advanced Practice Nurse Specialist (APNS) team is a collaborative effort with the APNS manager with contribution and recommendations for hiring, on-boarding and counseling. APNSs are expected to act as an expert resource person for health care providers including nurses, residents and other ancillary staff. Acts as an expert resource person for health care providers, orients/precepts new APNSs to role responsibilities of the service, establishes standardized procedures and protocols for APNS practice, conducts research and teaching programs. Assists in establishing educational opportunities for advanced practice providers. Acts as a liaison for APP supported services and PCS Chief of Advanced Practice. Provides practice supervision for all APNS FTE assigned. Acts in the absence of the program manager. Provides support for the APNS direct reports.
