At the direction of the Suffolk County Police Department Police Commissioner, an employee in this class assists in the supervision of continuing investigations of notoriety. Responsibility is included for providing oversight, coordinating interagency communication, employing alternative investigative strategies on previously-conducted investigations, preparing press conference materials, and identifying new technologies appropriate for assisting in special investigations. The incumbent represents the Police Commissioner at interagency meetings and provides updates regarding any progress or discrepancies. Typical work activities include providing oversight and coordination for cases of notoriety, establishing and maintaining lines of communication as a representative of the Police Commissioner at interagency meetings, developing meeting agendas, reviewing past investigations for missing leads, identifying and evaluating the applicability of evolving technologies and alternative investigative strategies for designated cases, and preparing press conference materials for designated cases. The position requires comprehensive knowledge of investigative principles, court procedures, security operations, laws and regulations related to criminal investigations, and the ability to implement innovative investigative procedures. Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice and ten years of experience in a law enforcement agency overseeing investigative teams in high profile cases.
