Our organization operates the California Research and Education Network (CalREN), a high-capacity computer network with more than 8,000 miles of optical fiber. The network serves over 20 million users across California, including the vast majority of K-20 students together with educators, researchers, and individuals at other vital public-serving institutions.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Manager, Network Operations, the CENIC Operations Intern is a part-time, temporary student position. Applicants must be enrolled as a student at an accredited college or university at the time of hire. Students interested in this internship opportunity must be available a minimum of three (3) days per week for at least five (5) hours per day. Student interns cannot exceed twenty (20) work hours per week. Students must be available to work during standard business hours, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The schedule can be adjusted as needed for classes as long as the work hours are within the times stated above. Total hours worked per week are dependent on CENIC's business needs and may be changed by the supervisor at any time.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Documentation audits and updates
  • Updating customer contact information
  • Abuse ticket processing and follow-up
  • Security ticket processing and follow-up
  • Compiling Weekly Outage reports
  • OOB testing
  • ISO Vulnerability Remediation tracking
  • ISO software updates
  • ISO Infosec activity stream updates
  • Assisting fellow interns in understanding existing documentation and Network Operations processes
  • Providing other assistance as CENIC's business needs dictate
  • Take individual responsibility, consideration, and awareness, as appropriate to the position, for security of CENIC and CalREN computer systems, the CalREN backbone, CENIC network equipment, and CENIC computing accounts; for the security and privacy of CENIC data and data pertaining to CENIC employees; and for the security and privacy of all systems, networks, and data pertaining to CENIC Associates and peers. Look for opportunities, procedures, and tools to improve CENIC's privacy and security practices. Report any concerns about CENIC security and privacy to your manager, the CENIC Security Team and/or CENIC Executive Management.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift moderately heavy (25 to 50 pounds) and heavy (over 50 pounds) objects, such as routers, switches, computers, and peripherals

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Currently pursuing an engineering, computer science, networking/security education or recent graduate (within the past six months).
  • Cypress Community college student or recent graduate (within 6 months)

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Basic knowledge of IP-based networking, including knowledge of routing protocols
  • Familiarity with office productivity tools such as email, calendaring, and MS Office applications
  • Basic knowledge of computer and network security,

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position operates in a professional office environment with standard office equipment including computers, telephones, photocopiers and filing cabinets. This position also includes work from home requirement.

WORK HOURS:

The Network Operations Center is a 24 hours per day/7 days per week/365 days per year operation. The regular workweek schedule is four ten-hour days on any days of the week. An employee’s work shift is based on CENIC’s business needs. CENIC Operations Interns must be available a minimum of three (3) days per week for at least five (5) hours per day.
