Blacksmith Construction Services (BCS) is a construction engineering and inspection firm seeking qualified candidates for various Construction Inspector positions in the Houston, Texas area.

We are seeking qualified Construction Inspectors for various structural and heavy highway projects. A qualified candidate would inspect construction methods and workmanship to ensure roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related structures are completed in accordance with plans and specifications.


Position Experience(s) :

  • Transportation Technician II: 2-8 years of experience in construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support-related services
  • Transportation Technician III: 8+ years of experience in construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance and repairs, materials or process inspection; or transportation engineering support-related services
  • Bridge and other structural inspection experience is strongly preferred
  • Related college education, relevant work experience or technical training may be substituted for experience

Qualification Requirements :

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Relevant industry experience as described per each position above
  • Read, write, and speak English clearly and fluently
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications
  • Experience and/or knowledge of TxDOT specifications and standard details
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record
  • Ability to sit, stand, climb, bend, twist, crawl or stoop frequently and for prolonged periods and under various outdoor conditions and travel across various types of terrain
  • Ability to reach horizontally as well as vertically for required tasks
  • Ability to use construction or inspection safety equipment including fall protection
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and shake up to 20 pounds
  • Maneuver safely around moving traffic and equipment and react immediately to hazard warning devices, such as signs, sirens, and alarms
  • Tolerate exposure to noise, outdoors, adverse weather conditions and other environmental conditions
  • Ability to input/retrieve information utilizing electronic devices and a variety of software systems
  • Ability and willingness to work extended hours in excess of eight hours per shift seasonally and/or be on call beyond normal business hours
  • Basic knowledge of various math disciplines (i,e basic math, algebra, trigonometry and/or geometry)
  • This position requires the candidate to drive a personally owned vehicle, appropriate for job site usage with State mandated motor vehicle insurance (See Benefits)
  • For safety purposes, candidate must pass a drug test prior to employment and could be subject to random drug testing during employment

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • This position requires the candidate to interact daily with contractors
  • Follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details
  • Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems and assists in coordinating inspections
  • Analyzes procedures and calibrates with project team to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to supervisor
  • Track, measure and calculate quantities for payment
  • Monitor project phasing and traffic control plans and ensure compliance with approved safety standards
  • Assists in engineering-related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
  • Performs tasks in accordance with applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques, laws, rules, and regulations
  • Complete tasks independently without frequent supervision
  • Serve as a lead inspector and mentor less experienced inspector(s) (position dependent)

Preferred Certifications/Credentials

  • ACI (i.e. Field Grade-I, Concrete Strength Testing, Special Inspector)
  • NICET Level I-III in Highway Construction
  • PTI Level 1 & 2 Multistrand and Grouted PT Specialist
  • OSHA 10 Hour Construction Training
  • ASBI Grouting Certificate
  • Temporary Traffic Control (Texas State Approved)

Benefits
This is a full-time, non-exempt position. Hours worked more than 40-hours per week are subject to overtime compensation.
