Job Summary

The Criminal Investigator will be responsible for conducting investigations related to criminal activity, policy violations, and other incidents that impact the Georgia Gwinnett College community. This position requires the ability to gather and analyze evidence, interview witnesses, conduct criminal investigations, prepare reports, and collaborate with other law enforcement agencies as needed. The individual must be Georgia POST certified at the time of hire, with continued training to develop skills in criminal investigations and law enforcement. This position offers an opportunity to serve the Georgia Gwinnett College campus community by ensuring safety, upholding the law, and conducting thorough investigations to maintain campus security.

This position is designated as Campus Security Authority (CSA) and is responsible for reporting crimes and other incidents to the Clery Act Compliance Officer for inclusion in the Annual Campus Security Report in accordance with the Federal Clery Act and GGC policy.

Responsibilities

Conduct investigations into criminal activities such as theft, assault, fraud, harassment, vandalism, and other violations of law or college policies.
Collect, process, and analyze evidence, ensuring adherence to legal guidelines and chain-of-custody procedures.
Interview witnesses, victims, and suspects to obtain statements and gather critical information.
Work closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to coordinate investigations and share relevant intelligence.
Maintain accurate and detailed records of all investigations, including reports, evidence logs, and case files.
Prepare cases for prosecution by compiling evidence, drafting reports, and testifying in court as needed.
Assist with crime prevention efforts, providing safety recommendations and educational outreach to the campus community.
Participate in professional development and training to stay updated on investigative techniques and law enforcement practices.
Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

High School or GED
1-2 years of previous experience in law enforcement, criminal investigations, or related fields is highly desirable.
Must be Georgia POST certified at the time of hire.
Must pass a background check, including a criminal history review

Preferred Qualifications

4 Year / Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice or related field.
Prior experience working in law enforcement or investigations in a higher education setting.
Additional certifications in criminal investigations, forensic analysis, or related fields.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Strong knowledge of investigative techniques, evidence collection, and criminal law.
Ability to effectively interview witnesses and suspects.
Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency in report writing and case documentation.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.
