POSITION DESCRIPTION 

Position Title: Farm Assistant

Reports to: Direct Supervision: Farm Director

Wage Category: Part-time Hourly (20-30 hours per week)

Supervises: Programming Staff, Volunteers, and other collaborating entities 

as directed by the Farm Director/CEO.

JOB STATEMENT Under the direction of the Farm Director, the Farm Assistant is responsible for the collaboration of planning, organizing, directing and performing the activities related to the farm. The Farm Assistant is responsible for the collaboration of repairs, maintenance, improvements, cleaning, grounds keeping, supervision of volunteer groups and collaboration with other departments and outside entities that may use the facilities as directed by the Farmer Director/CEO to support programming. The Farm Assistant will also collaborate in the management of the camp animals feeding and housing. Day-to-day work should be conducted professionally with a high commitment to safety, making the most effective and efficient use of skills, facilities, and equipment and the resources available. These responsibilities are conducted according to the organization’s policies, procedures, and all local/state/federal regulations and laws.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS YEAR-ROUND (20-30 hours per week)

1. Based on the responsibility for the care of the farm animals on site, consistent and prompt attendance is required in this role. Advanced notifications and immediate changes to schedules are crucial for the continuous and proper care we provide to our animals and our plants.
2. Collaborates with the Farm Director in the management and compliance of specific ongoing farm maintenance tasks such as, but not limited to, roofing, plumbing, sewage/waste removal, electrical, heating, grounds keeping, snow removal, road grading, erosion control, cleaning, interior and exterior farm maintenance, vehicle/equipment/tool repair and maintenance, managing camp animals feeding and housing, farm volunteers, collaborating with other departments, sensitivity to program schedules and demonstrating a high level of commitment to internal and external customer service. 
3. Collaborates with the Farm Director on the consistent care for the farm as a whole, animals and plants. The day-to-day workload consists of caring for the animals and plants on the farm, as well as the building and repairing of facilities. Cleaning animal stalls, trimming nails, planting, watering and pruning are included but not limited to in this role.
4. The love and respect for animals is required as this role will be caring for various animals such as multiple goats, chickens, rabbits and expanding. No fear of insects as the farm has Honeybees. No care of the Honeybees is expected from this role, but possible if willing to learn.
5. People skills required. This role will be to participate in the facilitation of programming provided to campers and other client groups as necessary. A willingness to work with and to teach children is required.
6. Collaborates with the Farm Director in the responsibility for working as a team with all directors, volunteers and other outside entities. 
7. Collaborates with the Farm Director in training and managing all farm personnel.

8. Collaborates with the Farm Director on working with program and other staff to develop and manage a farm master plan and in conjunction with the full staff on development of resulting short- and long-range project plans and capital improvements.

9. Collaborates with the Farm Director on plans, budgets and implements farm projects and improvements based on the site plan.

10. Collaborates with the Farm Director to maintain and balance annual farm budget.

11. In collaboration with the Farm Director, orients, trains, and supervises working volunteers (individuals or groups) as assigned and handles related logistics. Maintains log of volunteer activities, work hours and contact information. Works with the Farm Director to coordinate volunteers.

12. In collaboration with the Farm Director, maintains a work order system that tracks time spent on the various maintenance activities with set deadlines for those activities.

1. In collaboration with the Farm Director, is responsible for the development, collaboration and execution of a preventative maintenance program and budgets in consultation with other staff members.
2. In collaboration with the Farm Director, purchases maintenance related items according to organizational policies. Submits camp invoices to the Director of Operations in a timely manner for payment with proper account coding.
3. In collaboration with the Farm Director, answers routine inquiries and handles telephone calls on behalf of the organization’s farm and farm maintenance as appropriate.
4. In collaboration with the Farm Director, maintains (hard copy and/or electronic) files, records, manuals, photo files, and reference materials for the organization related to the farm and its assets. Maintains records of compliance activities (inspections, etc.). 
5. In collaboration with the Farm Director, is responsible for the annual audit of the facilities department as related to farm property and assets including but not limited to a full inventory of all property valued over $50.00 and the disposition of same.
6. Assists other departments with labor needs as time permits.
7. Completes other duties as required for the continued improvement of the organization.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND STANDARDS OF PERFORMACE

1. 18 years of age or older.
2. Valid Driver’s License.
3. A Bachelor’s Degree or Technical Degree in related field not required but preferred. Knowledge and experience in facility/equipment management and maintenance procedures and safety practices. 
4. Ability to work with minimal supervision and provide self-direction and initiative.
5. Ability to work as part of a team, engaging with co-workers, volunteers and constituents of diverse backgrounds. A high commitment to customer service and providing services in a friendly, respectful and courteous manner.
6. Ability to interpret the camp’s mission to constituents, volunteers and the general public.
7. Performs work in a logical, orderly and skillful manner.
8. Ability to stay calm and perform work under high stress situations.
9. Ability to identify and anticipate needed work and tasks to be completed for to benefit the organization’s programs
10. Proficient in basic office skills, programs, electronic communication and spreadsheet. 
11. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding organizational, personnel, client and donor information.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SENSORY DIMENSIONS

1. Physical mobility: standing, walking, bending and occasionally lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds. 
2. Manual dexterity to adequately use hand and power tools, operate large vehicles and equipment, computer, telephone, fax, photocopier, etc. 
3. Must possess valid Michigan driver’s license and be able to provide own transportation when required and has a driving record that allows for the driving of camp vehicles (based on insurance guidelines).
4. Ability to move about the buildings and Pretty Lake grounds consistently.
5. Mental effort: reading, writing, calculating, analyzing, planning, designing.
6. Sensory requirements: ability to read information in handwritten or printed form, on computer screens, etc.; ability to communicate in a friendly and positive manner with constituents, donors, co-workers, and vendors in person and over the telephone.
7. Must have basic math skills for requirements including but not limited to measure food, medications, fertilizers and building materials.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Indoor and outdoor work environment.

2. Must be willing to learn, get dirty, get wet, be hot and cold as we work in all seasons, weather and environments. Some greenhouse work is done in the summer.

1. The position is part time, a 20-30 hour work week can be expected with the understanding that the workload and hours will be a consistent 30 hour week during the summer camp season and based on other departmental programming. 
2. A flexible work schedule is required, working nights and weekends is expected in this role and as dictated by the needs of the organization.
3. Work can be stressful and subject to frequent interruptions.
