  • Duration: One semester
  • Reports To: General Supervisor and Technical Supervisor 
  • Compensation: $15/hour

Opportunity

The Laboratory Technician Internship will assist with receipt and handling of clinical specimens using established laboratory procedures. Duties include but are not limited to; receiving, accessioning, and processing of specimens, data entry of test orders, contributing to laboratory process improvement projects, and accurately documenting all work performed under the direction of the Laboratory Medical Director. A Laboratory Technician Intern will recognize and resolve problems using good laboratory practices under the supervision of Laboratory Management. This internship will provide the opportunity to learn how a clinical lab providing cancer testing in a highly regulated environment operates day-to-day while meeting fast turn-around times to provide patients with the answer they need. The applicant will learn about HPV-related cancer and how the rapidly growing molecular diagnostics sector has become a crucial tool for clinical decisions.

Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Clinical Laboratory Supervisors, you will be supporting the Clinical Laboratory processing of clinical and research specimens. Duties include:

Laboratory Testing & Analysis:

  • Determines specimen acceptability, consulting with supervisor, technologist, or Lab Director as needed taking appropriate action when necessary.
  • Interprets problems with specimens which meet the rejection criteria for unacceptable samples. Communicates with Technologists and Lab Management to reject a sample and request recollection to ensure validity of results.
  • Will gain experience with laboratory information systems by accurately entering all required information presented on NavDx Test Requisition Form or client specific requisitions into the laboratory information system.
  • Prepares specimens for analysis and determines acceptability of samples within guidelines.
  • Remains informed of procedure updates and changes.
  • Assists technologist team with various lab duties including, but not limited to: preparing sample tube set-up racks, preparing, handling, and aliquoting reagents, preparing BSL-2 lab for high-complexity testing by decontaminating and organizing space, prepare decontamination stations for testing equipment.
  • Assists Research and Development team with various projects.
  • Participates in Continuing Education coursework and literature review.

Laboratory Equipment & Maintenance:

  • Operate laboratory equipment under supervision and ensure it is functioning correctly.
  • Clean and sterilize laboratory tools and workstations according to laboratory protocols.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Completes and passes all mandatory trainings
  • Maintains CAP/CLIA compliance.
  • Maintains quality assurance and quality control programs, taking corrective action when necessary.
  • Follow lab procedures for specimen processing.
  • Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to clients and patients
  • Complies with safety and hazard regulations as outlined in the Clinical Laboratory Safety Manual. Failure to follow safety protocols will result in disciplinary action. Understands, maintains, and enforces safety guidelines.
  • Observes principles of data security and patient confidentiality. Maintains ethical standards in the performance of testing and in interactions with patients, co-workers and other health care professionals.
  • Support and comply with the company’s Quality Management System policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master’s program in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or a related field.
  • Completion of at least one year (2 semesters) of an Undergraduate 2-year (Associate’s) program, or an Undergraduate 4-year (Bachelor’s) program.
  • Prior laboratory experience with laboratory coursework and benchwork strongly preferred.
  • Interest in Cancer Biology, Healthcare, or Laboratory work.
