Description / Position Overview Park Guide North Cheyenne Cañon - (Seasonal Position) About this job: You will work in a mountain setting, near waterfalls, massive rock formations, and peaceful creeks. Learn from the experienced staff at Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center and Helen Hunt Falls Visitor Center to develop the best practices and skills you will need to work outdoors!
Job type: Seasonal
Work schedule: Hours worked will vary and be between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily, including required weekend and holiday hours. Up to 40 hours a week.
Work location: Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center 2120 South Cheyenne Cañon Road Colorado Springs, CO 80906
Open until filled. This is a seasonal (at-will) position with benefits limited to those required by applicable state and federal laws, which include Worker's Compensation, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, and PERA (Public Employees' Retirement Association).
Approximate dates of employment will be April - October. Scheduled hours will vary based on department needs. Total hours worked will not exceed 1,500 annually. As a Park Guide, you will: - Interact with numerous visitors from around the world
- Work with team members to operate and maintain Helen Hunt Falls and/or Starsmore Visitor Center
- Provide information, wayfinding, and maps for North Cheyenne Cañon Park and surrounding attractions
- Perform trail patrols and guided hikes for visitors around the Helen Hunt Falls area
- Inform visitors of park rules and safety regulations
- Respond to incidents involving injuries; communicate with emergency staff
- Open and close the visitor center; clean restrooms, and perform site maintenance
- Oversee adult and teen volunteers
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely
- Knowledge of the local environment and the natural and cultural history of the Pikes Peak Region
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Minimum Qualifications - Have a high school diploma or GED
- One year of experience in a related field or college-level course work in education, outdoor recreation, or natural sciences
- A desire to learn and be curious about nature, including wildlife, geology, trees, wildflowers, and ecosystems
Preferred Qualifications - Experience working or volunteering in a park or visitor center setting
- Experience creating and delivering interpretive programs
Additional Information Work is performed in a mountain environment with elevations up to 7,225 feet and possible exposure to extreme weather conditions. This position requires the ability to hike up to four miles, stand, climb, stoop, bend, and lift up to 60 pounds occasionally.
