Technical Engineering Writer | Welwyn Garden City | Hybrid
About Us
Our teams are putting the world's retailers online using the cloud, robotics, AI, and IoT. We provide services to partner clients globally via our innovative advanced robotics technology, known as the Ocado Smart Platform ("OSP"), this drives our highly automated, multi-million pound Customer Fulfilment Centres (CFCs). In our CFCs - together with the proprietary software applications - we operate a world-class online grocery business that automates the single pick of products, ready for your online delivery.
About the role
What does the team do?
We are a diverse, agile, highly-resourced team developing the hardware behind our Robotic Pick system. We're looking for an outstanding, enthusiastic Technical Author to join us in our exciting, challenging push to engineer 100% automated, completely unmanned grocery fulfilment centres. We are offering a highly competitive package to the right candidate.
Within the division, you'll be working closely alongside world-leading experts in engineering and robotics, who have already achieved results that are putting us leagues ahead of our competitors. We're a friendly group, and any one of us will happily talk (at length) about the tech we are working on. Following our acquisitions of Haddington and Kindred, you'll also be liaising with engineers from around the globe who can't resist solving the unsolvable.
What would I be doing?
As it's a small team, you'll be a key voice in the development of the technology. We are looking for a candidate who can demonstrate an ability to take ownership of documenting the processes to integrate our Robotic Pick into our grocery warehouses. You'll be responsible for documenting build, install, operation and maintenance, as well as generating H&S-related documentation. You'll take ownership for extracting the information required for technical documentation, including observing and documenting builds, installations, and repairs. You'll also independently interrogate CAD to generate illustrations, parts lists, and BoMs.
In doing so, we'll expect you to become the expert on the products you work on, and identify opportunities for improvements and products we hadn't yet considered. A candidate successful in the role will quickly make their mark as a key member in a rapidly growing team and product portfolio.
This is a hybrid role, with an expectation of 3 days per week in-office (the candidate may choose which days to take in-office each week)
What you will be doing
Produce clear, easy-to-read, and consistent documentation and supporting content for Robotic Pick.
Liaise with design teams and interpret design data to write concise, usable technical procedures in accordance with the Ocado style guide, and ensure consistent attribute naming for technical features.
Produce consistent unambiguous illustrations and other visualisations from existing design data (e.g. 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, electrical schematics, engineering bill of materials) to support technical understanding.
Validate the written manuals by personally executing the procedures on the intended automation equipment with some travel to Ocado sites within the UK. This will require flexibility and a practical approach using your engineering expertise and experience. Although not physically demanding the work will require a "hands on'' approach.
Creating and maintaining product diagnostic Fault Trees and troubleshooting guides.
Analyse and contribute to product requirements, functional design specifications, subsystem requirements, interface control documents, process charts, flow diagrams, manufacturing process documents, packaging and transportation specifications, factory acceptance tests, commissioning guides and site acceptance tests.
We'd love to talk to you if you have...
Proven technical writing experience for electro-mechanical systems, such as operation and maintenance manual, component maintenance manual, install manual and troubleshooting guide, according to accepted industry standards.
Professional or otherwise-gained mechanical experience, including the use of hand tools
The ability to write easy-to-read, fluent text in Simplified Technical English (STE), and the capability to organise content clearly.
Ability to create accessible illustrations from design data (including CAD) to support written procedures.
Impeccable written English, and the ability to write consistently and concisely in accordance with a style guide.
Proven background working within a structured authoring environment using industry recognised tools.
Ability to understand sometimes complex flows or technical information, and to be able to explain them clearly and simply to an end-user.
Proven background working in a structured authoring environment, and also have strong PC skills with high proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office products, functionality as daily work tools. (ST4, Madcap Flare desirable)
Ability to identify potential issues, analyse and recommend improvements and alternative solutions.
Confident to challenge engineering design and concepts.
Exposure to Research and Development (R&D) and familiar with supporting new product development environments
